This is an enduring story that brings pleasure to all Jaeger-LeCoultredevotees, whether they have the soul of a collector or simply a deep appreciation of objects with personality and infused with legend.

With its top-end watchmaking expertise, its distinct design, and the history associated with it, this gentleman’s watch remains a continuing object of desire.

The anniversary of an iconic calibre

The Memovox line has been a continuous element in the Manufacture’s history since the 1950s, and has a story that resonates with both aficionados and collectors of Jaeger-LeCoultre watches.

Featuring a double crown and a mobile disc with the desired alarm time shown by a triangular indicator, the Memovox watch made its mark on Fine Watchmaking the minute it was released.

Its legendary movement, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 815, was the first automatic movement to boast an alarm function signed by the Grande Maison and has inspired many others since its introduction in 1956. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Calibre 956that drives the Master Memovox Boutique Edition is direct descendent of the original.

“The voice of memory”

At the heart of its movement and its design is the alarm function. This eminently audible mechanical memory was invented in the 1950s, infused with post-war optimism that saw men set out to conquer the world in modern global management roles. The distinctive alarm is set to a meeting time or an event, and can be used as well as a wake-up call.

Now that our world has become consumed in all things digital, what could be more truly luxurious than being prompted to recollect a meeting, or being awoken, by the mechanical chiming of your wristwatch alarm? No doubt it is this somewhat old-fashioned charm that appeals so strongly to lovers of watches with personality.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

There are two crowns on this watch. The bottom crown is used for winding as well as setting the time. Setting the alarm function is simple: shift the top crown into neutral position. Then, in position 2, turn this crown in anti-clockwise direction until the desired ring time. In doing so, the mobile disc with its little “retro-style” and famous Memovox indicator triangle turns around the dial to the alarm time. Turning the crown clockwise allows you to set the date, displayed in an aperture at 3 o’clock.

The Grande Maison’s watchmakers wanted this watch to appeal to all the senses of the man who wears it, so they worked painstakingly to achieve a very pure sound for the mechanical alarm. Exacting standards underpin all the craftsmanship of Jaeger-LeCoultre.

A vintage design that still looks fresh

When Jaeger-LeCoultre’s designers set out to create this special anniversary edition of the automatic Memovox, they sought inspiration in a watch dating back to the 1970s, the Memovox Snowdrop. This rare model with its tranquil greyish-blue dial has lost none of its allure. Blue is quite emblematic of the Memovox collection and has always been a very popular colour for this watch throughout its history.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The dial has kept all the characteristics of the Memovox Snowdrop. Baton hands with a luminescent coating move around a white “railtrack” minute circle, which delineates the outer rim of the sunray-finish blue inner disc. Here is ensconced the little triangle that acts as a hallmark of the alarm function, and also glows in the dark.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Moving across an opaline blue surface, the triple-faceted hour-markers are also coated in luminescent material and overlaid by a grey-blue “railtrack” minute circle – just like the original watch. As a crowning touch, the twelfth hour-marker is replaced with a Jaeger-LeCoultre logo. This watch constitutes a fine homage to its ancestor, giving a modern “retro-style” look and feel.

As for the stainless steel case, its contemporary design with brushed finishes gives the wrist an unquestionable elegance. Turning it over to see its reverse side, one lights upon an entirely engraved case-back, marked as belonging to a limited edition of 500 pieces. The “1000 Hours Control” symbol in the centre certifies that the watch has successfully undergone 1000 hours of rigorous tests relating to its functioning and reliability.

The material selected for the strap is a deep blue braided cotton known as “Trieste”, with a contemporary light blue stitching. Supple calfskin lining ensures a comfortable and flexible fit.

IWC – DA VINCI Perpetual Calendar Chronograph

IWC SchaffhausenDA VINCIPerpetual Calendar Chronograph

RENDEZVOUS BETWEEN MOON AND CHRONOGRAPH
DA VINCIPERPETUAL CALENDAR CHRONOGRAPH

TheDa Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is the brand’s first watch to combine the hour and minute counters with the moon phase in a single subdial. Achieving this called for a development of the IWC-manufactured89630 calibre. A silver-plated or gold-plated disc depicts the full moon in all its glory. At the same time, the rounded, dark blue section of the disc – representing the earth’s shadow – rotates to show the waxing or waning moon. With white gold particles sprinkled across the dark blue background, the subdial has the appearance of a star-studded night sky.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph (Ref. IW392101/IW392103) is the first model in IWC’s history to combine a chronograph from the 89000 calibre family with the perpetual calendar’s moon phase display in a subdial at “12 o’clock”. To achieve this, both the moon and the shadow of the earth are depicted on a single disc and rotate beneath an aperture in the lower part of the subdial.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Together with the other three displays, this new function creates a harmonious unit on the dial of the 43-millimetre watch. The Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is available in two versions: 18-caratred gold and stainless steel.

INSPIRED BY KURT KLAUS

Poor is the pupil who does not surpass his master, Leonardo da Vinci supposedly said to the man who taught him his craft. These words were also at the back of the minds of IWC’s engineers as they set about redeveloping the perpetual calendar created by IWC master watchmakerand inventor KurtKlaus. While creating the 89630 calibre, IWC’s present-day master watchmakers constantly referred back to the old design blueprints that were their source of inspiration.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

But there was a significant challenge, as the moon phase in the IWC-manufactured 52610calibre normally used for the perpetual calendar is located at “12 o’clock”. If the chronograph’s hour and minute counters were to be placed there, the hands would go straight through the centreof the moon phase disc. The 89360 chronograph calibre, on the other hand, had no room for a moon phase. As a result, the engineers designed the 89630 calibre, combining the dual counters of the chronograph with the moon phase mechanism and displaying them on a single subdial

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A MODERN TIMEPIECE WITH A BALANCED DESIGN

With its 43-millimetre case diameter and case height of 15.5 millimetres, the design of the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph is impressive yet carefully balanced. The crown and the two push-buttons are cylindrical and no longer as round as those of the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendarof 1985. Combined with the large lugs of the moving horns, they create an impression of overall harmony. Despite the many displays, the dial remains clear and uncluttered because the designers chose dark blue as the colour for the chronograph moon phase totalizer at “12 o’clock”. This firmly distinguishes it from the dial and three subdials of the red gold version (Ref. IW392101) and the stainless-steel model (Ref. IW392103), which are silver-plated and slate-coloured, respectively.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the red gold model, the case, horns, crown and push-buttons are all made of solid 18-carat red gold. A gold folding clasp holds the dark brown alligator leather strap by Santoni. In the stainless-steel version with its black alligator leather strap, the slate-coloured counters are equipped with rhodium-plated facets that once again emphasize the circle as an important design element. A glance through the transparent sapphire-glass back cover reveals the sophisticated design of the movement, which has blued screws, a red gold rotor and various types of decorative polishing on the bridges. The IWC-manufactured89630 chronograph calibre with an automatic double-pawl winding system features a 68-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

ELEGANT SOLUTION FOR THE CHRONOGRAPH DISPLAY

For the chronograph, the designers likewise made no concessions. The hour and minute counters are combined in a totalizer at “12 o’clock”, which enables stopped times to be read off as if they were the time of day. This is a significantly more elegant form of aggregate timing than two separate counters. The blue central chronograph hand shows stopped times to an accuracy of one-eighth of a second. The chronograph has two push-buttons,which are used to start, stop and reset the hands, as well as for the flyback function. The movement itself is designed in such a way that the stopwatch can run continuously without diminishing the 68-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

PRECISE COMPLICATION

The perpetual calendar works with the utmost precision: in577.5 years, the display will diverge by just one day from the moon’s actual course. The perpetual calendar displays the date, month and day of the week on three subdials of the same colour at “3”, “6” and “9 o’clock”, respectively.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A small window in the bottom left-hand section of the dial reveals the four-digit year display. Mechanically programmed, the calendar takes into account the different length of the months and even the leap years. Nevertheless, every 100 years (2100, 2200, etc.) a leap day normally due is omitted, which means that a watchmaker will have to advance the calendar manually on 1 March. In 2300, another intervention will be necessary when the current century slide with the figures 20, 21 and 22 will need to be replaced with a new one for the years 2300 to 2599.

Frederique Constant– Classic Worldtimer Manufacture Brown Dial - New Version 2017

PRE-BASELWORLD2017 HIGHLIGHT
The New Elegant Classic Worldtimer Manufacture

Geneva – Frederique Constant adds anew Worldtimerto the Classic Manufacture Collection, tracking time in twenty-four of the world’s most wonderful cities.

Globetrotter

The man of today has become a true Citizen of the World and travelling has become as natural as running or reading. It is the “it” hobby of the moment! Frederique Constant has redesigned the Classic Worldtimer Manufacture and presents its latest version. A sophisticated new brown color pattern for the more classical man. Perfect for meeting get-a-ways or some downtime across the globe, allowing you to track time around the world with the greatest of ease.

New design

Rose gold-plated stainless steel and brown patterns make the new Worldtimer, an elegant and sophisticated travelling watch. A dark brown design of the world map finely etched onto to the dial and the twenty-four cities on its outer rim make you wish for the next destination.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The date by hand at 6 o’clock seamlessly combines with the Worldtimer function without disrupting the esthetic of the watch. And even though the dial is busy with information, indexes on each hour make reading the time an easy and simple task.

Mechanics

The watchmakers at Frederique Constant have accomplished an extraordinary feat with the Classic Worldtimer Manufacture, which not only embellishes the timepiece but also is key to the user. They were able to create an in-house developed, produced and assembled caliber holding 139 parts and measuring 30mm in diameter, where the Worldtimer function is completely controlled by the crown. Thus, no additional push buttons or correctors were added which is esthetically more pleasant and simpler to use. Frederique Constant is the first brand to ever introduce such complication achievement.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The crown has three positions. The first lets the user manually wind the watch by turning the crown upwards; the second allows the user to set the date and city by turning the crown upwards and downwards, respectively; the third position allows the user to set the time by turning the crown downwards. This Worldtimer features two discs, one displaying 24h day-night indication and a second one listing the twenty-four cities. As a true Manufacture movement, this FC-718 caliber features Perlages and Côtes de Genève decoration, and this particular one holds a 42h power reserve.

Franck Muller – GRAVITY™ V45 Skeleton

Franck MullerGRAVITYV45Skeleton Tourbillon Titanium Black

For 25years,Franck Mullerhas been reinterpreting watchmaking tradition in order to propel it into a high-tech dimension. The 2017 creations are no exception to the rule and send a distinctly avant-garde breeze blowing through the time-honoured art of skeleton-working.

 GRAVITYV45 Skeleton

The tourbillon bridges of the Gravity™ Skeleton take their place within a 3D architectural concept, supported by a rounded structure that is entirely openworked, like the mainplate. Engineered to revolutionize the watchmaking design, the Gravity™ line continues to evolve introducing this time a new skeletonized version, combining cutting-edge technology with unique heritage.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The pioneering construction of the movement lies in the shape of the bridges that have been turned into a concave and convex shape, offering the watch an exclusive design. The skeleton body of the Gravity captures the gaze with its massive mechanism where the bridges and the pillars of a traditional tourbillon have been turned into an elliptical circle with diameters of 21.2mm, giving the timepiece a three dimensional aspect. An eccentric balance of 14mm further characterises this unconventional tourbillon. The 3D structure of its bridges and the plate has been entirely skeletonised with the aim of emphasising the volume of its massive mechanism. The structural lines of this masterpiece are enhanced by the use of colors on the tourbillon cage as well as on the open-worked hands.

The very strong character of this piece is further accentuated by the texture and structure of its case that recalls the pioneering character of the Gravity line. Featuring the highest quality materials, the master watchmakers of Watchland invested all its resources to make the Gravity skeleton a true piece of design and innovation.

The new Gravity skeleton is available in a wide range of colored finishes, allowing creating a watch that is unique and exclusive while still offering the highest Swiss quality. Indeed, the components in anodized aluminum will enable you to personalize your timepiece with a wide range of striking colors: from orange to yellow, blue, purple and many more.

With the aim of bringing the future forward, this new model represents a combination of exclusivity and high tech luxury.

JACOB & CO. – ASTRONOMIA Tourbillon OCTOPUS Sapphire Case Edition

JACOB & CO.ASTRONOMIA Gravitational Triple Axis Tourbillon OCTOPUS Sapphire Case 50mm Unique Piece

JACOB & CO. PRESENTS
THEASTRONOMIA OCTOPUS

Jacob & Co.FounderJacob Arabo draws upon the brilliance and mystery of nature with the introduction of the brand’s entirelynew Astronomiamodel, theAstronomia Octopus.

Recognized amongst the most intelligent creatures on Earth, octopi complement the world of watchmaking
with their complex nature, symmetrical composition, and mesmerizing movements. The Astronomia Octopus
manifests these natural synergies through whimsical design, weaving a hand-crafted sculpture of an octopus
through the Astronomia’s signature gravitational triple-axis tourbillon.

Taking into consideration both the sophistication of the design and the comfort of the wearer, the intricately handcrafted sculpture of the Octopus is composed of titanium. While titanium is ideal for adorning the movement without adding significant weight to the piece (the octopus weighs just 2.83 grams) the material is notoriously difficult to engrave or sculpt, making it all the more difficult to bring the piece to life.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In the typical manner of an octopus, the sculpture appears fully entwined in the JCAM16 manually wound caliber. Its tentacles wind around the Earth, the sun, the time and the triple-axis tourbillon. The central part of the movement, where the octopus is screwed to the central axis so that it may revolve around the dial like all the other components, is too modified from the Astronomia collection’s prior models to accommodate the new gold-plated sculpture.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The first Astronomia model to include a sculpture in the core of its composition, the Astronomia Octopus is displayed as a true work of art, cased in a new sapphire monoblock casing that allows the sculpture and complications to be admired from multiple angles. The entirely transparent monoblock case was originally created for the brand’slimited addition Astronomia Flawless. In both models, it creates the illusion that the complications inside the timepiece are suspended in mid-air, as the only non-sapphire elements are the two bows on the back to wind the movement and set the time.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The sapphire components of the Astronomia Octopus take a staggering 37 weeks to produce and each component requires at least a dozen different operations in its production. This excludes the time it takes to engrave the piece and the octopus sculpture, as well as the time allocated to assemble and meticulously hand-finish the movements.

Since its initial launch just under three years ago, Jacob & Co.’s Astronomia Tourbillon has consistently evolved with the introduction of each new model. Because of the additional layer of complexity added by the octopus, the Astronomia Octopus is piece-unique.

MONTBLANC – TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic

MONTBLANCTimeWalker Chronograph Automatic

Continuing the motor racing theme, the new Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic is rooted in the world of racing with details that recall the golden years of motoring with a chronograph function that is legible and stylish for today’s gentlemen drivers. The vintage car codes are visible throughout the watch, starting with the 43 mm stainless steel case that has been satinated for an automotive look and better resistance to scratches. The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph Automatic features the emblematic unidirectional rotating black bezel knurled on the flank and made of shiny high-tech black ceramic for utmost robustness and durability.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Ceramic has impressive properties such as a high-resistance to scratches, non-oxidization, a unique shiny surface, and a defence against all common chemical agents. The bezel can be used as a second time zone indicator. The horns have been semi-skeletonized like the air inlets of a car’s body, and the black DLC crown and chronograph pushers have been knurled like vintage petrol caps for better gripping. Completing the motor racing design, the case back has been fitted with a smoked glass opening, reminiscent of the glass windows that cover powerful V12 engines, and the straps include perforation holes, much like the leather driving gloves used in the days when steering wheels were made of wood and needed to be firmly gripped.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The black dial features strong colour contrasts with silvery-white and red elements, as well as three-dimensional counters that bring back memories of vintage dashboards. Distinctive design codes include a red chronograph seconds hand in the centre, which has a tip sculpted in the form of the Minerva arrow; chronograph hours which are displayed in a subdial at 6 o’clock, and a 30-minute chronograph counter positioned at 12 o’clock.

All the readings are highly legible thanks to black rhodium-plated dauphine hands injected with SuperLuminova, and a precise silvery-white minute track that has also be enhanced with both SuperLuminova and red markers for the 15-minute marks, providing excellent visibility both in the day and at night.

ANGELUS – U10 Tourbillon Calaveras

ANGELUSURBANU10 Tourbillon Calaveras - Unique piece

From the earliest days of its conception, the master model U10 Tourbillon Lumière was imagined as a piece of mechanical art, paying tribute to some of the most influential and forward-thinking designers from the60s and70s, such as Dieter Rams and Achille Castiglioni.

Now, Angelus is pushing the envelope even further by integrating striking visual art into this singular watch.

With its unique design and especially its vitrine-type construction, the U10 offers an extraordinary platform to showcase not only its oversized tourbillon, but also miniature works of wearable art. As such, Angelus will take on different themes from various artistic movements and integrate them with its U10.

The first unique piece from this Angelus U10 art collection pays tribute to the old tradition of Mexican Calaveras. These are part of a very ancient tradition of memento mori. Since Ancient Rome, Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. Symbolic reminders of mortality, what could have been a better theme to ornate the tourbillon watch displaying dead beat seconds than a mementos mori?

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The Calaveras are mainly used in the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), where people remember and honor those who have passed on with calaveras, poems and other forms of symbolism. Above all, it is a celebration of life and its transient nature.

TheU10 Tourbillon Calavera is a unique piece in stainless steel,
which launches the
Angelus U10 art collection.

A timepiece of glorious contrasts

Four years in the making, the U10 Tourbillon Calavera not only upholds the Angelus tradition of creating extremely inventive timepieces boasting finely-finished, in-house movements with long power reserves, it is also a timepiece of glorious contrasts.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

On one hand the U10 Tourbillon Calavera is classic haute horlogerie. Its dead beat seconds complication – where the second hand advances in full steps of one second – derives from 18th-century pocket watches; the movement bridges and plates are in traditional nickel-silver that is bevelled and polished; and the traditional 2.5Hz / 18,000 vph of the screwed balance with Breguet-overcoil is a throwback to some of Angelus’ early pocket watches.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

And yet, the modernist display, innovative engineering and state-of-the-art materials and finishing ensure that the U10 Tourbillon Calavera can equally be viewed as a paragon of cutting-edge, contemporary watchmaking.

Flying tourbillon on full show thanks to deconstructed movement and duplex case

The configuration of the manual-winding calibre is decidedly avant-garde, with the tourbillon positioned far outside of the movement, displayed alone as a dazzling mechanical sculpture in its own sapphire crystal vitrine.

The generously-proportioned – 62.75 mm x 38 mm x 15 mm – case, which took over two years to develop, features no fewer than seven sapphire crystals. All the crystals are bevelled, polished and subtly protrude from the case, creating expressive three-dimensionality.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Four of these crystals – including one wrapping 90° over the end of the case – surround the tourbillon, allowing unfettered views to the beating heart of the timepiece. The large windows also let light flood in and shine a spotlight on this mechanical centrepiece. The vitrine aspect of the tourbillon space is cleverly enhanced by light-absorbing, matte black PVD finish on the interior walls encasing the tourbillon.

The stainless steel used to make the case is BO-988 specific steel. This annealed steel is of a higher quality than the usual 316L steel found in timepiece cases because it contains fewer impurities, is less liable to corrode and is more biocompatible. Its finer grain size allows for a better standard of polishing and higher level of finish.

State-of-the-art movement materials, long power reserve and high precision

With its generous 16.25 mm diameter, the hand-polished tourbillon cage is crafted from weight-saving stainless steel, while titanium has been chosen for the tourbillon bridge due to its strength and shock-absorbing qualities. The flying tourbillon configuration does not need an upper supporting bridge and offers unimpeded views to the top of the regulator. The combination of nickel-silver, titanium and stainless steel in a watch movement is unique and especially the magenta lacquer for the bridge of the tourbillon cage.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Supporting the two mainspring barrels (which are in series for better timekeeping precision) is a bridge featuring a high-tech laser-engraved, satin-finished, criss-cross pattern. The two ratchets are also laser-engraved and enamelled.

A large diameter one-minute tourbillon requires significant energy, which is amply supplied by the dual main spring barrels. When fully wound, the Angelus A100 calibre provides a very healthy 90 hours of optimal power. The two mainspring barrels are optimally sized in a special ratio for a flatter torque curve, which maximizes accuracy throughout for the full 90 hours.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Indications and displays

The hour and minute hands – brushed finished, rhodium-treated and filled with blue lacquer – are actually set into the concave dial made of grey-tinted sapphire. Like the interior of the tourbillon vitrine, the walls of the dial recess have also been bead-blasted to a matte finish and then black treated. Tiny holes drilled into the dial at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock and filled with Super-LumiNova create bright white markers.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In a neat touch highlighting the meticulous thought that has gone into every aspect of the U10 Tourbillon Calavera, the dead beat seconds hand rotating flush with the top of the dial features a counter weight on its short end. Each passing second marked by the hand aligns perfectly with the radial white and yellow lines printed onto the dial.

While the dead beat seconds hand’s step-by-step motion is the result of a traditional horological complication, the stepped seconds is also reminiscent of quartz watches. Indeed, Angelus has deliberately sought to evoke the era of quartz watches, which also have stepped seconds.

Completing the indications on the side of the case is the intuitive linear power reserve featuring a rhodium-treated hand filled with blue lacquer.

About G-SHOCK
CASIO’s shock-resistant G-SHOCK watch is synonymous with toughness, born from the developer Mr. Ibe’s dream of ‘creating a watch that never breaks’. Over 200 handmade samples were created and tested to destruction until finally in 1983 the first, now iconic G-SHOCK hit the streets of Japan and began to establish itself as ‘the toughest watch of all time’. Each watch encompasses the 7 elements; electric shock resistance, gravity resistance, low temperature resistance, vibration resistance, water resistance, shock resistance and toughness. The watch is packed with Casio innovations and technologies to prevent it from suffering direct shock; this includes internal components protected with urethane and suspended timekeeping modules inside the watch structure. Since its launch, G-SHOCK has continued to evolve, continuing to support on Mr. Ibe’s mantra “never, never give up”.

A. Lange & Sohne – TOURBOGRAPH Perpetual Platinum Edition

A. Lange & Söhne1815 TOURBOGRAPH Perpetual"Pour le Mérite" Tourbillon Platinum Limited Edition

The epitome of classic watchmaking

The fifth masterpiece in A. Lange & Söhne's "Pour le Mérite"series combines the fusée-and-chain transmission with a tourbillon, a chronograph, a rattrapante function and a perpetual calendar. The combination of these five complications makes the TOURBOGRAPH PERPETUAL"Pour le Mérite"a peerless timepiece.

In October 1994, A. Lange & Söhne presented the first collection of the new era, including the legendary TOURBILLON "Pour le Mérite", the first wristwatch with a tourbillon and a fusée-and-chain transmission. It was followed in 2005 with a further model in which these two elaborate constructions were united: the TOURBOGRAPH "Pour le Mérite". But there was more: a chronograph with the rattrapante function made it the manufactory's most complicated watch at the time.

Now, the movement has been endowed with a fifth complication. In the development phase, the integration of a perpetual calendar in the TOURBOGRAPH PERPETUAL "Pour le Mérite" presented the engineers of the Saxon manufactory with a formidable challenge: to orchestrate the interaction of the complex mechanisms in such a way that mechanical conflicts or unwanted energy losses could be prevented.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In this project, the perpetual calendar mechanism had to be built around the tourbillon. Consequently, only about two thirds of the movement surface were available, and this necessitated a redesign of the basic calibre. At the same time, the developers did not want to noticeably increase the height of the movement.

A classic concept

The TOURBOGRAPH PERPETUAL "Pour le Mérite" is the epitome of classic watchmaking: its hallmarks permeate all domains from design and engineering to consummate, flawless artisanship. The dial itself reflects the traditional approach in timekeeping. Arabic numerals, a railway-track minute scale, blued steel hands for the time and rhodiumed gold hands for the calendar as well as the cloverleaf arrangement of the subsidiary dials pay tribute to the famous A. Lange & Söhne pocket watches.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Tradition also governs technical details such as column-wheel control for the chronograph and rattrapante mechanisms as well as the screw balance. Finally, it manifests itself in typical quality elements such as the two diamond endstones that suspend the tourbillon cage or the black-polished tourbillon bridge. The stately platinum case with a diameter of 43 millimetres is a fitting stage for this horological masterpiece.

Perpetual calendar

Of the 684 parts of the new L133.1 manufacture calibre, no fewer than 206 constitute the perpetual calendar with its analogue displays. It will correctly indicate the duration of each month until 2100. A one-time correction will be needed on the last day of February in this secular year. From then on, the calendar will again be correctly calibrated for the next hundred years. It has three subsidiary dials. The date at 12 o'clock and the day at 9 o'clock are indicated with rhodiumed gold hands.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The month and leap year are both displayed at 3 o'clock. The upper half of the analogue date also accommodates the moon-phase display which is calculated to remain accurate for 122.6 years. Its deep-blue disc is made of solid gold. During the development of the calendar module to be built around the tourbillon, great emphasis was placed on space-saving architecture.

Chronograph with rattrapante function

The development of highly complex chronographs and their meaningful interaction with other functions is among the Saxon manufactory's key skills. Apart from the two chronograph pushers on both sides of the crown, a third button at 10 o'clock modestly reveals that the TOURBOGRAPH PERPETUAL "Pour le Mérite" deserves a place in the top-tier category of split-seconds chronographs. The fascinating function of the split-seconds mechanism can be observed in great detail with a look through the sapphire-crystal caseback. The precise control of the gold-plated chronograph hand and the blued rattrapante hand is handled by two column wheels. During a complete revolution of the 30-minute counter at 9 o'clock, as many lap times as needed can be stopped

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The combination of a perpetual calendar with a split-seconds chronograph is very rare. Power management is an especially challenging undertaking. In particular, the simultaneous use of several functions calls for mechanical ingenuity, for instance when the calendar indications advance around midnight and the stopwatch function is used at the same time. Assembling such a movement requires considerable experience and exceptional sensitivity when adjusting and harmonising the mechanisms.

One-minute tourbillon

In the way they flawlessly interact, the tourbillon and the fusée-and-chain transmission offset two disruptive phenomena in a mechanical movement: gravity and waning spring force. Thus, they contribute to improved rate stability and rate accuracy.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The L133.1 movement that works inside the TOURBOGRAPH PERPETUAL "Pour le Mérite" is already the tenth calibre with the delicately linked mechanism that overcomes the pull of gravity. The traditional black polish of the tourbillon bridge integrated in the dial imposes new challenges on the finisseurs because for the first time ever, this complex finishing technique is being applied to a curved surface.

Fusée-and-chain transmission

The results of A. Lange & Söhne's efforts to develop intelligent energy management systems for mechanical movements – and thus to compensate for the unavoidable torque loss of the mainspring barrel – include three different constant-force escapements as well as the fusée-and-chain transmission which was integrated in a wristwatch for the first time in 1994. It is the technical hallmark shared by all timepieces identified by the attribute "Pour le Mérite" in reference to the erstwhile Prussian order conferred for exceptional scientific merit.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Via a fusée connected to the spring barrel with a chain, the force of the mainspring is delivered to the movement in constant increments thanks to the ingenious way in which the principle of levers is harnessed. A planetary gearing mechanism inside the fusée assures that the flow of power from the mainspring barrel to the escapement is not interrupted while the watch is being wound. The filigreed yet robust mechanism requires the utmost in attention as regards design, production, finissage, and assembly.

Perfection down to the last detail

The TOURBOGRAPH PERPETUAL "Pour le Mérite"is being crafted in a limited edition of only 50 platinum-cased watches. The finish of the manufacture calibre complies with the highest standards of Saxon watchmaking artistry. Thermally blued screws, screwed gold chatons, bridges and plates made of untreated German silver and decorated with Glashütte ribbing and perlage as well as the hand-engraved chronograph bridge round out the highlights of the classic complication.

Born for great feats, speed and challenges, the Colt Skyracer reflects the nature of the MXS-R “Skyracer”, the high-performance plane on the BreitlingRacing Team flown by aerobatics rising star Mika Brageot in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship.

A new generation destined to lead the field.

Mika Brageot and hisSkyracer
a fantastic pair for the Breitling Racing Team

A newcomer in the Master Class category, young French pilot Mika Brageot is now flying the Breitling colors in the Red Bull Air Race at the helm of his high-performance “Skyracer” with its truly extraordinary appearance. The new generation Breitling Racing Team.

After flying under the Breitling banner for eight seasons and winning the Red Bull Air Race World Championship2014 in particular, British ace Nigel Lamb has retired from competition. He will however not be leaving an empty seat behind him, as Frenchman Mika Brageot will now be heading the Breitling Racing Team.

The youngest pilot to have joined the French Aerobatics team, Mika Brageot (born 1987) swiftly climbed his way up the ranks of aeronautical competition at national, European and international levels. In 2014, he was selected for the Red Bull Air Race Challenger Cup and pulled off the amazing feat of winning it as early as his second season. In 2016, he was selected to inaugurate a new mentoring program as Nigel Lamb’s “protégé” which enabled him to become acquainted with the high-speed, low-altitude competition.

Trained by the best, Mika Brageot is also taking the controls of Nigel Lamb’s high-performance airplane that he already had opportunities to fly throughout 2016. But to mark this new start, the MXS-R re-named “Skyracer” has been completely repainted with an original, daring, military-inspired design that creates as much of a surprise in the air as on the ground. It flaunts a style that is a blend of “vintage” and “hard-worn” aspects, with the fuselage and wings in rust color as if the plane – albeit in the vanguard of technology – required some serious restoration.

An offbeat tip of the hat that is perfectly in sync with the Breitling spirit. The presence of a large brand signature running across the plane from one wing to the other, together with an XXL winged logo under the wings, also ensures optimum visibility – in every position – during these competitions that are amongst the most spectacular in the world.

Michel HERBELINInspiration 1947 Anniversary Limited Edition

A watch to celebrate the brand’s70thanniversary

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

1947 saw the foundation of French Watchmaking companyMichel Herbelin, which this year celebrates its70th birthday. An anniversary watch commemorating those seven decades of watchmaking passion is to be issued in a numberedlimited seriesof500 worldwide. Paying tribute to the past, this new timepiece christened Inspiration 1947 also brings beauty into the present moment, beating to the rhythm of its manually wound mechanical movement.

An inspired style

While naturally drawing inspiration from the watch designs of its earliest years – 1947 to 1950– Michel Herbelin has taken painstaking care over every detail of its anniversary model to anchor it in the 21st century.

The case measures 40 mm in diameter, its design a ubiquity of rounded curves extending into refined, plain lugs. A domed dial shelters beneath an answering curve of sapphire crystal, set off by the polished yellow gold that plates the steel case. Patterned with a matte silver sunburst, the dial heightens this model’s understated aesthetics with two hands in finely curved dagger shapes that sweep around a clearly set out minute track punctuated by gilded applique hour-markers. With a date aperture discreetly set at 3 o’clock, the classicism of the overall design is subtly roused by the graphic starkness of the dial’s small seconds counter.

Lovers of beauty will appreciate Michel Herbelin’s single-minded attention to the finish of each tiny detail. Like the ribbed, ball-shaped crown set with a blue cabochon, or the watch strap made from gold leather, artisanally hand-finished for a patina that brings the final touch of elegance to the timeless design of this commemorative timepiece.

A manually wound mechanical movement

True to the watchmaking conventions of the 1950s, Inspiration 1947 is fitted with a manually wound mechanical movement – the first seen at Michel Herbelin since 1970. As ever, a Swiss-made calibre was selected to guarantee reliability and sturdiness: the 24-jewelled Sellita 11 ½ SW216-1 oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 42-hour power reserve. The circular graining and Côtes de Genève pattern of its workings can be admired through a transparent caseback.

Watchmaking expertise in the French tradition

Founded in Charquemont in the Haut-Doubs region, French Watchmaking Atelier Michel Herbelin has been designing timepieces that highlight French watchmaking expertise for 70 years. The family-run business takes pride in producing quality watches of refined design, and making them widely accessible through its reasonable price range. In keeping with this philosophy laid down in 1947, the Michel Herbelin anniversary watch was conceived, designed, assembled, calibrated and inspected within the Maison in the Jura.

MONTBLANCTimeWalker Chronograph 1000 Monopusher Limited Edition

Montblanc TimeWalkerCollection
 Uniting Performance and Innovation

“Glory isn’t measured in thousandths of a second, but the victory that creates it is.”

Racing drivers have always strived for faster lap times with increasingly powerful and efficient vehicles, experimenting with technology, materials and more in their quest to win. The same is true for Montblanc, which has never stopped innovating and pushing the boundaries of fine watchmaking technology. In 1916, the Minerva Manufacture developed its famous 1/100th of a second stopwatch, which was further technically improved in 1936, putting Minerva on the map as the specialist of professional watches and stopwatches. Montblanc continues to innovate with theMontblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 1000 Limited Edition18, a mechanical chronograph that measures elapsed time to the 1/1000th of a second.

In the spirit of motor racing, this limited edition embraces the world of motorsports through and through. From its powerful design to the mix of high-tech and high-performance materials, the Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 1000 Limited Edition 18 is the height of horological technology. Its high-frequency movement boasts two patents and 22 auxiliary patents combining performance and innovation like never before.

Inspired by performance

The spirit of racing is not only found on the inside of the timepiece, but also on the outside, with design elements that hark back to the glory days of motor racing. The chronograph power reserve indicator is inspired by old fuel gauges, while the black and red details and the 1/1000th of a second indication are reminiscent of early dashboards.

Knurled crowns and bezels evoke vintage petrol tank caps, and red holes in the black alligator strap are typical of the driving gloves that were so popular with gentlemen racers. The timepieces feature a high-frequency balance wheel that has also been inspired by the performance of racing cars, and a monopusher chronograph at 12 o’clock, which mirrors the Minerva stopwatches that were used for timing car races.

Mix of high-tech materials

A sophisticated combination of high-tech materials has been chosen for the Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 1000 Limited Edition 18, starting with the 46.4 mm titanium case and semi-skeletonized horns that have all been satinated and treated with a black DLC coating for ultimate scratch-resistance, robustness and lightness. The case is complemented by a titanium monopusher at 12 o’clock and a fixed black ceramic bezel that has been engraved with white Arabic numerals that characterize the overall design of the line and accentuate its legibility and performance.

The dial is a multi-layer construction with black horizontal stripes, red indications and a red gasket, which is framed by a smoked sapphire crystal, enhancing the sporty and racing aesthetic.

The heart of the matter

Recording the time to 1/1000th of a second is a feat of horological engineering. The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 1000 Limited Edition 18 works thanks to one movement with two hearts: the first heart indicates the time functions, and the second one is in charge of the chronograph indications. The hours and minutes are at the centre of the dial with the addition of a small second counter with a rhodium-plated hand at 9 o’clock. The hour, minute and second displays keep time accurately thanks to a large balance with 18 screws, which beats at the traditional pace of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour. This balance wheel is partially visible through the skeletonized dial at 7 o’clock. All other indicators serve the chronograph function, to which this exclusive timepiece devotes the highest priority. The chronograph’s small balance can be seen at 10 o’clock showing oscillations at a rate of 360,000 semi-oscillations per hour (50 Hz). In order to allow a finer adjustment and then further improve its precision, the chronograph’s small balance wheel has been equipped with two hairsprings, which are fixed on top of each other.

The mechanics explained

When an elapsed interval is being measured, the chronograph’s elapsed 100th of a second hand orbits the entire dial once per second. But rather than occurring as a smooth progression, this circular motion is sub-dived into 100 individual steps which the naked eye cannot distinguish from one another. The chronograph’s centre-wheel, to which the central chronograph hand is affixed, likewise jumps from one tiny step to the next in a hundredth of a second increments. However, the thousandths of a second are measured in an entirely different way.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

In order to go further and measure a thousandth of a second, the Montblanc engineers had to innovate. They developed a movement with a balance beating with a frequency of 360,000 semi-oscillations per hour. This rapid oscillator completes 100 to-and-from motions per second, i.e. 50 times in one direction and 50 times in the other. This tempo not only guides the motion of the 1/100th dedicated mechanism, but it also sets the pace for delivering an impulse of energy that sets into rotation an innovative wheel in the gear train, the so-called “thousandth wheel”. Powered in this fashion, it rotates around its own axis at a uniform speed of ten rotations per second and thus provides the resolution with which hundredths of a second can be further divided into sets of ten increments.

The chronograph is controlled by a two-level column-wheel: one level controls the whip to start, stop and reset the seconds, minutes and the thousandths of a second, and the other level guides the hammers to reset the seconds and the minutes. The reset of the 100th-of-a-second hand is accomplished in a particular way thanks to a disc with a catch at the centre of the movement. This catch, made of an alloy of copper, improves the reliability of the mechanism.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

Rather than remaining continually in motion, the separate balance for the chronograph begins to vibrate only when the start function is activated by a flexible steel lamella or whip mounted behind the arrowhead of the chronograph rocker. When the stop function is triggered, this slender steel plate stops the small 50-Hertz balance and holds it motionlessly in place until it is needed again.

The chronograph function is powered by its own barrel, which stores enough energy to measure intervals of up to 45 minutes in duration. An elapsed-time measurement can be indefinitely extended by turning the crown anti-clockwise while the chronograph is running, thus adding fresh energy to the chronograph’s barrel. The going train for the ordinary time display draws its energy from a second barrel that guarantees a 100-hours of power reserve.

This long-lasting power reserve also contributes to the regularity of the amplitude of the balance beating at 360’000 oscillations per hour which, in turn, enhances the precision of the time measuring — a decisive advantage for accurately measuring intervals to the nearest thousandth of a second.

Indicating the 1/1000th

The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 1000 Limited Edition 18 is surprisingly easy to read as it follows a familiar pattern that is found on the vast majority of chronographs. A double counter at 6 o’clock has a longer, red-tipped hand to tally elapsed seconds from 1 to 60, as well as a shorter, all-red hand to count a maximum of 15-elapsed minutes. The chronograph’s indicators begin with a red, centrally axial, elapsed 100th of a second hand that completes one full 360° rotation every second so that its tip sprints along the hundredths-of-a-second scale on the dial’s periphery. The thousandths of a second is displayed at 12 o’clock on a cartouche inspired by the speedometer of vintage car dashboards, where a triangular red pointer progresses along a scale calibrated from 0 to 9. The resting position is indicated by the letter “N” (for neutral), leaving the 0 to clearly indicate the thousandths, i.e. one full 100th of a second.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

A slightly inset display at 3 o’clock indicates the remaining reserve of power for the chronograph’s movement which, when fully wound, will operate for more than 45 minutes. The power-reserve display also serves as a helpful indicator for the chronograph because it shows how much longer the chronograph will continue to run beyond the 15-elapsed minutes it can tally.

Measuring performance

The mainspring for the ordinary timekeeping movement is wound by turning the crown clockwise (the power reserve is about 100 hours). Turning the crown counter-clockwise winds the separate mainspring for the chronograph’s movement, which delivers optimal measuring results for more than forty-five consecutive minutes. To tally lengthier intervals, power can be conveyed to the chronograph’s barrel by turning the crown while the chronograph is running. Pressing the button between the horns at 12 o’clock starts the chronograph and sets the long red chronograph second hand in motion as it races around the main dial once per second. Double counters at 6 o’clock tally its rotations.

The small red hand on the chronograph’s power-reserve display gradually progresses upwards, and the 1,000th-of-a-second arrowhead at 12 o’clock points motionlessly toward the “N”. When the chronograph button is pressed again, the entire system instantly halts and the duration of the elapsed interval can be read: beginning with the number of elapsed minutes on the inner scale on the double counter at 6 o’clock, followed by the elapsed seconds on the outer scale of the same subdial, continuing with the hundredths of a second on the peripheral scale surrounding the main dial, and culminating with the thousandths of a second in the display at 12 o’clock. The entire process is simple, clear, quick and requires no additional calculations.

This revolutionary timepiece is testament to how Montblanc has never stopped innovating by always pushing the boundaries of what is technologically possible. Equipped with Montblanc’s Manufacture Calibre MB M66.26, this manually wound monopusher chronograph is decorated to the finest standards of Swiss watchmaking with decorations and finishings that include Côtes de Genève, circular graining, hand chamfering and burnishing. In addition to the ingenious mechanics, the Maison knows how to complement its inventions with harmonious designs that, in the case of the Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 1000 Limited Edition 18, capture the spirit and adventure of those early racing drivers, their magnificent racing machines, and the passionate officials who meticulously timed them using Minerva’s precision instruments. This Limited Edition captures it all in a timepiece that marks a new chapter in Montblanc’s history.

Symbol of beauty recalling that life is beautiful and short ...

For Japanesethe first days of spring is marked as their favorite period of the year, whenSAKURAtrees (cherry trees) are blooming... Japanesetradition says that, starting with pink and white flower buds, a great period of festivities called "Hanami" begins…

All the archipelago’s inhabitants meet together, with family or friends, to meditate and contemplate the ephemeral beauty of the flowering trees.

In its relentless pursuit of beauty, CVSTOS was inspired by this state of contemplation, letting the delicate buds of feminine grace blossom... The “RE-BELLE SAKURA” was born from an animated staging built on a three-dimensional dial which is articulated around a sleek branch of cherry blossom perfectly punctuated by the functions of the mechanical CVS-55/ TWIN-TIME automatic winding movement, which combines two small Complications, in order to play this composition in harmony with passing time.

An ode to the beauty of the passing of time and its renaissance ... where Haute Horlogerie is harmoniously mixing with art and crafts and art jeweler.

Having the woman’s versatility and the flourishing tree in mind, CVSTOS dedicates the RE-BELLE line to the elegant woman, this irresistibly feminine new tribute, which stands out from its usually sportier predecessor. It is equipped with a CVS-55 automatic movement with small complication. The “RE-BELLE SAKURA” is dressed in a three-dimensional dial with the cherry tree floral motif, inlaid with mother-of-pearl or treated metal base of white PVD, which barely conceals the useful functions such as the Grande Date display and the now known “Twin-Time”, while putting them all in evidence.

This dramatic composition is made of flowers finely carved in the mass and colored by an artisanal process commonly called “Miniatures Paintings” which permits to view this small complication’s useful features; at 6 o’clock stands the «Twin-Time» function, topped by a rotating flower with a perforated petal, that makes appear, when passing by, the indication of the 2nd Time

Zone; at 12 o’clock we find the window of the Grande Date display harmoniously placed in the movement of the branch, the display is animated by 2 finely perforated discs. The hours of this dial Tower are majestically surrounded by a flange adorned with 12 small diamonds enfolded by their respective setting.

Promise of refinement, the tonneau-shaped case of the “RE-BELLE SAKURA” is also designed in the same innovative spirit that characterizes the CVSTOS brand, by the purity of its line and curves where volumes are giving an infinite sweetness to the voluptuous proportions of the exclusive “Serti Neige” case and where all of the settings are carried out from the screwed safety Crown of Titanium Grade 5, or Pink Gold 5N, itself equipped with a ring inlaid with diamonds and topped by a bullet-shaped blue Sapphire cabochon.

Once again, CVSTOS innovates and puts its signature in its collection by offering a new technique of random crimping, more commonly known as the

“Serti Neige”, which makes use of both the creativity and the genius of the jeweler’s artisan, so... that each watch is different. With this innovative offer CVSTOS is positioning the “RE-BELLE SAKURA” in the area of art jeweler. This timekeeper with its unique and rare aesthetics is a true show, in which the enchanting sparkles of diamonds do invite the eyes to dive into the very heart of the staging directly on this moving painting.

This exceptional timepiece is made of BLACK 316-L Steel or DLC treated 316-L

Steel or Pink Gold 5N, all with “Serti Neige” setting, the “RE-BELLE SAKURA” is fitted exclusively on colored Stingray leather bracelet, both pearly and rectified and closed by means of a set pin buckle.

ZENITHEl PRIMERO36'000 VPH Automatic Chronograph Black Ceramicised Aluminium

El PRIMERO36'000 VPH – PERFECT DUALITY

GENEVA 2017

The legendaryEl PrimerobyZenith appears attired in striking black and white variations. An intense black ceramicised case, chiaroscuro three-counter dial and sporty perforated rubber strap reveal a fascinating take on a watchmaking legend born in 1969.

The Manufacture’s iconic El Primero 36’000 VpH epitomises high mechanical precision endowed with enduring charm. These contrasting twin timepieces - black on white, white on black – are a new couple, exuding a seductive aura characterised by natural balance.

A legend in black and white

1969 was a historical year for the watch industry that saw Zenith present the world’s most accurate series-made chronograph: the inimitable El Primero. Alongside its high-frequency movement, El Primero also stands for an emblematic design recognisable at first glance. Its three counters – originally in anthracite, blue and light grey – symbolise the functionality of a sophisticated mechanism and have been part of the Zenith DNA for almost half a century.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

An original aesthetic that makes light of passing time and lends itself to infinite variations in terms of materials, styles and colours. The fast-paced chronograph now reveals a particularly sophisticated look in two chiaroscuro interpretations. The counters provide an attractive and complementary ‘visual opposites’ effect against a finely sunray-patterned ebony black or silver-toned base, punctuated by black luminescent facetted hour-markers and hands enhanced with bright red touches.

Inseparable

The intense black ceramicised aluminium case of these two new El Primero 36’000VpH models houses a high-frequency column-wheel chronograph movement, a signature of the horological expertise cultivated by the Manufacture for over 150 years. Beating at 5Hz and powering a tenth-of-a-second display, the El Primero 400B calibre drives central hours and minutes functions, small seconds, chronograph and date, while ensuring a more than 50-hour power reserve.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

The domed sapphire crystal, round push-pieces and knurled crown accentuate the powerful build of this 42 mm chronograph. This beautiful mechanism and its oscillating weight – offering a fascinating visual counterpoint to the model’s binary colour codes – may be admired through the sapphire crystal back of the 100m water-resistant case.

Timeless and resolutely unconventional by nature, El Primero enriches its black and white look with a sporty touch thanks to a perforated black rubber strap secured by a titanium and black PVD-coated triple folding clasp.

Technique and style go hand in hand at Zenith!

Bridging refinement and watchmaking
know-how Golden BridgeRectangle

 PRE-BASELWORLD2017

Corumenriches its unique and emblematic Golden Bridgewith a newrectangular case shape

The new refined rectangular look of the classic Golden Bridge was created by renowned designer Dino Modolo, who enhanced the beautifully engraved and finished inline movement by adding an astonishing play of finely crafted geometry: 18-karat gold structures representing six Roman numerals surround the completely visible caliber, creating a harmonious nostalgic feel between the shapes, rivets, and materials that carefully remind the architecture of a bridge.

Following the design codes of Art Deco, the Golden Bridge Rectangle shows a timeless and discreet elegance, yet focuses on the functionality of its brilliant movement, leading the eye along the path of Caliber CO113’s energy transfer from spring barrel at 6 o’clock to the escapement at 12 o’clock.

Perfectly complementing the case and movement, the elaborate gold micro structures suspended between the panes of sapphire crystal add eye-catching brilliance while adhering to the rectangular shape dictated by the case.

“The Golden Bridge is the capstone of Corum’s collections, an illustration of Swiss horology at its best,” Corum’s CEO David Traxlersaid.“Its innovative aesthetic and unique movement construction are timeless. With this new Rectangle version, we wanted to go further with the architecture of the timepiece itself to create yet another classic edition of our signature haute horlogerie timepiece.”

Perfectly proportioned, the Golden Bridge fits beautifully on the wrist, and unlike its role model from 1980, thanks to modern technology this refined version is fully water- resistant to 30 meters/3 atmospheres.

VOUTILAINENVingt-8 ISO White Gold

 Project Description

The Vingt-8 ISO watch bears an original display of hours and minutes, functioning as follows:

  • At the top of each hour, the minute hand overlaps the hour hand.
  • On every half hour, the minute and hours hands are opposite.
  • The circle of minutes turns at the same rate as the hour hand for easy reading.
  • The angle between the hour hand and the minute hand remains the same regardless of the time.
  • The position of the hour and minute hands, with respect to the other is always according to the minutes, whatever the hour is.

Daniel Kahneman, world renowned psychologist and Nobel Prize laureate in economics for Creating the field of Behavioral Economics, published Thinking, Fast and Slow; In what he describes two different ways to brain form thoughts – System 1 and System 2.

Click, to see the large size. FOTO

Telling time by looking at a wrist watch is a result of a System 1 activity: a glance suffices because the « code » is so deep and familiar that in an instant you know the time without having to think twice.

The Vingt-8 ISO counters this code; Conforming to Kahneman’s System 2 behavior. You can not read the time; You have to switch to System 2. It now creates a more intimate and reflective relationship with this watch – it takes a few seconds now to « know » the time; But you know the time « better » with the Vingt-8 ISO because your attention is keener. You definitely intellectual-have a deeper relationship with this watch Because System 1 is no longer modus operandi.

The Voutilainen Twenty-eight wristwatch perfectly encapsulates the philosophy of Kari Voutilainen. Its elegant and strong mechanism is housed in a stylish and robust case. The in-house movement of the Twenty-Eight was designed, built, fabricated, finished and assembled in its entirety in Voutilainen workshop. The design and philosophy of the movement combines respect for longevity and precision with classical watchmaking tradition.

The movement has a very large scale manufactured in-house, allowing perfect regulation of the watch to within tolerances. To equip such an exceptional timepiece, a very rare and unique balance-spring system has been used. Phillips overcoil, while the internal curve uses the little known Grossmann curve.

The escapement makes the movement very special; This is the first watch to have two escapement wheels in such a configuration. The escapement wheels give a direct impulse to the balance through the impulse roller / jewel.

Click, to see the large size. BIG FOTO

This escapement is extremely efficient and requires much less energy than traditional lifting escapements, offering benefits in terms of longevity and stability in day-to-day use. The balance-wheel bridge is sublimely elegant, offering an unimpeded view of the escapement and balance. It also allows the enthusiast to admire the synchronized movements of the escapement wheels.

The watch is finished to the highest standards. The surfaces of pinions and wheels are completely flat and highly polished to exceptionally uniform tolerances. All finishing work on the main plate and bridges is by hand to achieve the highest possible levels of surface finish. Screws and all steel parts are finished and polished by hand.
