In accord with the extraordinary history and high level of watch making of Urban Jϋrgensen, we are pleased to present our new 1140 RG L Brown for 2017. At first glance, the 1140 L RG Brown exhibits a simplicity that conceals the complexity of its creation. The construction methods and craftsmanship used appeal especially to connoisseurs of fine watchmaking. While some design elements and finishing are clear to see, others are virtually hidden from view. This new model complements the Jurgensen 1745collection with a blend of our most precious examples of watchmaking art -, the Urban Jurgensen Hands, Guilloche dial, tear drop lugs and the in-house P4 movement.

The 40mm classical case design used in this reference, has a round form, teardrop shaped lugs and stepped bezel combined with exquisitely finished dial and hands.

Urban Jürgensen hands are very much hand-made. They comprise a significant number of components that are individually honed, assembled and finished. This naturally implies numerous hours of highly skilled workmanship and are a key feature of Urban Jürgensen timepieces. The steel arms of Urban Jürgensen hands are cut from selected steel and manually finished to ensure a perfect shape and fit.

Numerous hours of diligent polishing with increasingly fine-grained diamond paper are followed by mirror polishing using secret types of polishing paste applied using a variety of wooden pegs specially shaped for the task. The final touch is then set by meticulous thermal blueing, patiently performed by highly experienced artisans until they meet the inimitable Urban Jürgensen shade of navy blue. When the noble art of watchmaking is exercised at such a superlative level, the importance of the human hand is of course matched by that of a trained and expert eye. Symbolically, the ‘eye’ of the hour hand on Urban Jürgensen watches is a hand-crafted wonder in its own right: a concentrically diamond-polished solid gold insert that is precision-fitted and thus free of any glueing or soldering. Its asymmetrical design, gently tapered towards the tip, ensures a unique elegance. This unwavering commitment to excellence is further exemplified at the very centre of the dial, in the precision-turned and mirror-polished solid gold hand pipes (also known as bushes), around which the arms are riveted to ensure a perfect fit.

Urban Jürgensen are considered masters of the art of the hand finished guilloche dials. In the new model, it can be appreciated in the great attention to detail in the dial layout and pattern selections Grains d’orges and Guilloché Damier. Each dial requires up to 700 operations and takes 2 full days of hand work to complete on a guilloche lathe. After engine-turning, the dial is repeatedly brought to Rose heat and treated with acid to produce the unique warm colour by developing a fine layer of pure silver on the surface finally the dial is imbued with the proprietary Urban Jurgensen brown.

Hand-wound, hand-fitted and hand-made: hands at Urban Jürgensen indeed not only indicate time but in 2017 continue to stir the same excitement, approval and wonder among watchmakers and connoisseurs alike as they have for over 240 years.

About Urban Jürgensen

Our story started in 1745 with the birth in Copenhagen of Jürgen Jürgensen, founder of the watchmaking dynasty that still bears his name. Jürgen’s son, Urban Jürgensen (1776 - 1830), quickly followed in his father’s footsteps. After completing his apprenticeship at such extraordinary watchmakers as Breguet in Paris and Arnold in England, Urban steered the Jürgensen brand to new heights. Urban’s two sons, Jules-Frederik and Louis Urban, then continued the family tradition. Jules studied in Switzerland and moved to Le Locle, while his brother Louis remained in charge of the factory in Copenhagen, giving the company roots in both countries that have been maintained ever since. The innovation and excellence of Jürgensen’s output exerted a tremendous influence on the watchmaking industry of Le Locle and, indeed, the entire Canton of Neuchatel, introducing the latest techniques from around the world. Of course, none of this happened by accident; rather, it has been the product of centuries of commitment and dedication to the arts.

The Zurich watch brand Werenbach produces quality mechanical watches with material from rockets that have been in space. With the “Earth Collection”, the start-up company is launching a collection that everyone can afford. To realise this undertaking, Werenbach is relying on the support of the Internet community.

From another world – a piece of space on your wrist

All Werenbach watches contain original material from the Soyuz spacecraft. In 1961 this type of rocket launched the first astronauts into space and today still carries astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS).

“We want to bring space and space travel closer to the people. With watches made of spaceborn rocket material and with the realization that comes from space: every astronaut who has observed the Earth from space is aware of the relativity of our existence. Specifically, the watch material comes from the first stage of the rocket, which was jettisoned shortly after launch and fell back to Earth. The boosters landed on the steppes of Kazakhstan, where they were retrieved by Werenbach founder Patrick Hohmann and transported to Switzerland. The material was prepared there and processed into precision watch components.

Whereas in the models of the hand-made Atelier Collection, the case as well as elements of the dial (in some models) were made of rocket material, in the ‘Earth Collection’ original material was used solely for the dial. The material for this collection comes from the Soyuz spacecraft, which was launched on 19 October 2016 destined for the International Space Station (ISS), returning back to Earth on 25 February 2017.

The rocket determines the design – each watch is unique

«At Werenbach focus is not on the history of the watch brand, but on the history of the material. Spaceborn material to which there is otherwise no access,” said Patrick Hohmann. The raw material used is left in its original condition and by the colour, one can easily see which part of the rocket it comes from: if the dial is white, the material comes from the fairing of the spacecraft (nose cone); if it is grey, then it was made from part of the booster.

The orange-coloured metal plate incorporated in the dials of some of the models comes from the cladding of the rocket engine. In short, the rocket determines the design of the watch. The unprocessed surface of the original rocket parts shows scratches and other signs of wear that make each watch unique.

Win-win thanks to crowdfunding

To keep the prices of the ‘Earth Collection’ low, Werenbach used a new construction concept as well as a new production process. The watches also contain a less-complex movement and are produced in considerably larger quantities. Production is being pre-financed with the launch of a crowdfunding campaign on the international online platform “kickstarter.com”.

About Werenbach

The Zurich start-up company Werenbach has been making watches since 2013 out of material from spaceborn Russian Soyuz rockets. Up to now the watches have been produced in very limited editions and sold directly. Three watches have already been unofficially tested by astronauts in space. Patrick Hohmann is the owner and CEO of Werenbach. He wrote about his entrepreneurial beginnings in the adventure novel ‘Werenbachs Uhr’ (Bilgerverlag, 2015).

This is a win-win situation: the buyers finance the production and help the manufacturer increase awareness, at the same time they can purchase the watches at one-time wholesale prices. The mechanical watches are available from 490 CHF. The offer begins on 26 March 2017 and is limited to two months. Delivery of the watches will be five months after the crowdfunding campaign ends. Once the watches are officially on the market, they will cost approximately twice that amount.

Technical Characteristics

This dial was cut from the inner surface of the rocket booster. The surface has been left in its original condition. Each watch is therefore different due to signs of wear and color nuances.

The Launch Sequencer scale displays the three stages en route to orbit. Information such as time, altitude and stage (rocket stages I, II and III) are arranged on the watch, giving readings for the point at which each rocket stage is jettisoned.

This year, the brand is honoring the Arabic culture with its own Arabic Heritage Edition timepiece. This special watch will be available in all Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

Astronomy in Arabic Culture

For as long as time itself, Arabs have been precursors in the fields of mathematics, algebra and astronomy. For this noble culture, not only did the stars and the moon tell a story, but they dictated their daily lives. Indeed, this culture used the stars and the moon to create the lunar calendar which is still followed today.

The calendar set the different important moments in a person’s life, such as Ramadan or Hajj. Nighttime and all its celestial wonders hold the most important meaning in a Muslim’s life and this is why it was only natural to Frederique Constant to design this timepiece with a midnight blue dial and incorporating a moonphase at 6 o’clock.

Arabic Heritage

The Arabic Heritage Editionfeatures Eastern Arabic numerals on the dial. The system was adopted by Arab mathematicians in Baghdad and passed on to the Arabs farther west. After one of his visits to the Maghreb region, Fibonacci later adapted these symbols to the numerals used today in western society.

Frederique Constant’s timepiece honors this heritage by placing these eastern Arabic Numerals on the dial as one of the most precious Arabic Heritage symbols.

The FC-715 is one of the most sought after movements in the Manufacture collection. This version holds a 40,5mm stainless steel case featuring a case back opening, that once opened reveals the heart of the movement, a true hidden treasure. The movement features a 6 o’clock opening for the moonphase and date by hand featuring the Eastern Arabic numerals, both adjustable through the crown.

As a true Manufacture movement, completely in-house designed, produced and assembled, it features Perlages and Cotes de Genève decoration and this particular caliber holds a 42h power reserve. The dial features a mesmerizing midnight blue color which contrasts with the silver-colored hands and numerals mimicking an endless starry night. The whole is made complete with an elegant blue alligator strap.

Only Watch Partnership

Now presenting its 7th Edition, Only Watch is a biennale auction of unique timepieces that has raised over 25 million Euros to date. Under the patronage of HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco and following the initiative of Luc Pettavino, President of the Association Monégasque contre les Myopathies, Only Watch is an international watchmaking charity event.

All of the funds collected from the sale of the watches are donated in their entirety to scientific and medical research. The exclusive watches will embark on a world tour starting in the charity’s hometown of Monaco, and then continuing to Asia, the Gulf, the United States and Europe, before the final auction in Geneva on November 11th 2017.

Inspired by the famous Minerva chronographs from the 1930s, the Montblanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter Unique Piece Only Watch’17continues this horological journey by capturing the spirit of Montblanc’s past in a new and contemporary way. Paying tribute to the Montblanc 1858 Chronograph Tachymeter Blue Limited Edition 100, which won the prestigious Grand Prix d’horlogerie of Geneva 2016 as the best Chronograph, the timepiece features the traditional manual monopusher chronograph movement, the calibre MB M16.29; a distinct bronze case that has been combined for the very first time within the Montblanc Collection with a vintage green dial and a matching green alligator strap – making it truly special. “Montblancis pleased to contribute a timepiece to Only Watch to help further research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy and help those suffering from this illness all over the world,” shares Nicolas Baretzki, Montblanc CEO.

Turning to bronze

The choice of a 44 mm bronze case enhances the vintage design of the timepiece.

Through this metal, Montblanc combines traditional Swiss artisanal watchmaking with a genuine material from watchmaking history.

Particular attention has been paid to researching the perfect alloy of bronze that will evolve with its owner by developing its own unique, uniform and attractive patina over the years. The subtle changing colour of the case further enriches the appeal of this unique piece.

Design codes

The historical design codes taken from the original 1930s Minerva chronograph include large cathedral hands with a cloisonné design filled with beige Super-LumiNova®, luminescent Arabic numerals that have been highlighted by the gradation of the green dial, a vintage shaped crown and a classic minute railway track.

Other design details include the original Montblanc logo from the 1930s era with its historical font and emblem of the Mont Blanc Mountain in the centre, along with a green alligator strap that was made by the artisans at the Montblanc Pelletteria in Florence. The strap is also fitted with a satinated bronze-plated buckle that also complements the overall design.

The heart of the timepiece

At the heart of the timepiece lies a traditional manual monopusher chronograph, the Minerva MB M16.29, with a column wheel mechanism, horizontal coupling, chronograph bridge in a "V" shape, a large screwed balance wheel with a frequency of 18,000 semi oscillations per hour and a power reserve of 50 hours.

This in-house chronograph has been entirely handcrafted at the Montblanc Manufacture in Villeret and is a sight of unparalleled beauty thanks to its exceptional finishing. Designed in a large "pocket watch" style, the MB M16.29 has been inspired by the original 17.29 Calibre designed for pocket watches and wristwatches in the 1930s. This new version uses almost the same shape of components as the 17.29 Calibre, but features different finishings, such as inside angles, Côtes de Genève stripes and circular graining. For the first time, the Calibre MB M16.29 bears red gold-coloured components that offer a totally new look and that perfectly match the bronze material and vintage appeal of the timepiece, while also reinforcing its monochrome aspect. As with all the Minerva calibres, one of the movement’s components is shaped into the form of the Minerva arrow to pay tribute to the Manufacture's heritage.

The chronograph indications are displayed via a central chronograph seconds hand and a chronograph minute counter at three o'clock. Other indications on the dial include a tachymeter scale that runs around the dial and a small seconds’ counter at nine o'clock. The MB M16.29 is a chronograph that adheres to the true spirit of fine watchmaking.

Limited to 350 watches, the Aquatimer Automatic 2000 Edition “35 Years Ocean 2000” (Ref. IW329101) is the thinnest deep-sea diver’s watch in IWC’s collection. Despite the minimal case height, it functions reliably on dives of up to 2,000 metres – thanks to the new, improved shape of the titanium case.

When diving with compressed air, divers must always keep an eye on the time to make sure they don’t put themselves in danger by returning to the surface too quickly. On the Aquatimer watches from IWC, the dive time can be set using the rotating bezel for extra safety.

The innovative SafeDive system ensures that the bezel can only be ad-justed by turning it anticlockwise. So even if the bezel is accidentally moved, zero hour – the time at which the diver stops – is never exceeded. July 2017– It’s neither a Laurent Ferrier watch nor an URWERK, yet the signatures of both firms appear on its back. The existence of this unexpected watch defies logic because it is the joint effort of two watchmaking companies that couldn’t be more different. Each bases its identity on the opposite ends of watchmaking’s stylistic spectrum. On one side, the expression of time-honoured traditions; on the other, an anarchic effort to overturn conventions. Laurent Ferrier and URWERK have created a piece of work that is unique, for only one-of-a-kind watches qualify to be sold at the Only Watch auction in aid of the battle against Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

This remarkable watch also offers a unique opportunity to witness two independent brands working together to produce a watch for the Only Watch 2017sale. Laurent Ferrier has forged an enviable reputation as master of the definitive watch in the classic style. URWERK, on the other hand, has spent the last 20 years challenging the watchmaking world with its bold originality. The result of this extraordinary association is in front of your eyes.

Let’s deal with the case first. You can well imagine the perfect, almost aerodynamic, curves coming to life in the confident strokes of Laurent Ferrier’s pencil. “It’s a cleanly cut watch. My friends know my love of cars, a predilection expressed in this watch. This new creation is like streamlined coachwork, fluid and without any affront to the eye,” he explains. Such a design demanded a special material. “For that we turned to the Cendres+Métaux company in Biel.” The case was shaped from an exclusive alloy called ARPAL+, specifically developed for this unique watch. ARPAL+ consists of 75% precious metals and resists wear and scratches better than white gold or steel. Its colour never fades, nor does it oxidise. This alloy was first developed for the electronics industry where it is much appreciated for its strength and because it is easily worked.

The polished case of the Only Watch by Laurent Ferrier and URWERK is what first catches the eye. It reflects light like no other and seems to sparkle. In contrast, URWERK’s movement was created with every restraint. Unlike the case, it is almost self-effacingly colourless. The four hours satellites are in a matt pearly grey with diamond-polished outlines while the hours and minutes markers are painted in white SuperLuminova. “We undertook this project with the greatest respect for each other’s work” Felix Baumgartner declares. “We held a great number of operational meetings, setting up a dialogue and developing a friendship that is apparent in the final result. We were aiming for subtlety rather than performance” he adds.

The time is shown by four satellites, each bearing three hours numerals, which successively sweep past the track of minutes. This original and intuitive way of telling the time is aided by a cover in polyetheretherketone, a thermoplastic known as PEEK, which hides the satellites that are not engaged in indicating the time. The satellites turn on a hidden carrousel, at the heart of the successive passage of the hours. It’s no easy job to engineer the smooth and silent revolutions of a module that weighs 500 times as much as a conventional set of hands.

Martin Frei has the final word on this remarkable venture: “Throughout the undertaking we complemented one another perfectly, sending the ball back and forth. For example, the cabochon winding crown recalls the stripes of our satellite hours. There are many subtle ways in which we refer to each other’s stylistic codes. WhileURWERK has opted for discretion,Laurent Ferrierhas raised the tone. The result is perfect equilibrium.”

Every two years, the leading names in watchmaking get together to raise funds for research into muscular dystrophy. Each company gives of its best to create a unique watch to entice an enthusiastic, demanding and generous gathering. This year, Laurent Ferrier and URWERK have subscribed to this remarkable initiative.

The story started behind the watchmaking scenes. It was in November 2015 at a watchmaking exhibition like many others, thousands of kilometres away from Geneva. There, two watchmakers, exiled from the cocoons of their respective workshops, made a tentative effort to escape the crowds and take a break. Slightly bewildered by friendly bustle, they sought refuge under a staircase. They hardly knew each other, though their paths had crossed, but destiny seemed to have brought them together. Thus did Laurent Ferrier and Felix Baumgartner meet.

“We simply introduced ourselves,” recalls Felix Baumgartner. “Of course, I knew him by sight and something about him. But there, we seemed to be alone in the world, lost in a bubble, and so we got to know one another.” Laurent Ferrier picks up the story: “I’m rather shy by nature, but I quickly found common ground with Felix. The place was peculiar, but the time was right.”

Their friendship was to blossom into a joint project — to build a bridge between two watchmaking companies and thereby to create an exceptional watch for a noble cause. Combining tradition with daring innovation was like mixing oil and water. But that is precisely what URWERK’s Martin Frei likes doing best. “When I learned about the project, I was immediately enthusiastic. Bringing together two visions, two cultures and two generations in a single creation seemed to me a splendid stylistic exercise.”

The 40mm stainless steel watch is characterised by its streamlined case shape, an homage to the original Chronoris, and houses an automatic chronograph movement that provides a central seconds chronograph hand and 30-minute and 12-hour counters at 12 and 6 o’clock.

Oris’s designers have given it a number of touches to denote the link to Williams. The central chronograph seconds hand and minute scale are both in Williams blue, while the case back is embossed with the Williams Racing logo. The new watch is a fitting tribute both to Williams Racing and its eponymous founder, and also to the Chronoris. When it was launched in 1970 the Chronoris became Oris’s first chronograph, created to appeal to a generation of racing enthusiasts hooked on the daredevil exploits of the era’s F1® drivers. Its unconventional, uncompromising case shape epitomised the bold design tastes of the time, and it passed into Oris folklore.

As an extension of the 1815 watch family, A. Lange & Söhne is presenting a further version of the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH with the stopwatch function. It persuasively combines a white-gold case and a black dial with a pulsimeter scale.

The ability to measure times has always been one of the most useful and exciting functions of a mechanical watch. This applies in particular when the many levers and springs of the chronograph can be observed in action. A. Lange & Söhne has been crafting models with stopwatch functions since 1999 – fitted with sapphire-crystal casebacks like all other Lange watches.

The1815 CHRONOGRAPH was added to the 1815 family in 2004. It is a paragon of classic design combined with advanced technology. The traditional style elements reminiscent of the pocket-watch era include the railway-track minute scale and the symmetrically arranged subsidiary dials – the subsidiary seconds on the left and the 30-minute counter on the right. They emphasise the balanced proportions of the watch.

In 2010, the 1815 CHRONOGRAPH was endowed with a new movement. It has a power reserve of 60 hours and features a manufactory-made free-sprung balance spring. Its carefully calibrated interaction with the large, cam-poised balance guarantees excellent rate accuracy.

Because it beats at a frequency of 18,000 semi-oscillations per hour (2.5 hertz), the watch can measure times with an accuracy of one fifth of a second. The calibre L951.5 movement also powers the new 1815 CHRONOGRAPH in the 39.5-millimetre white-gold case. The rhodiumed hands ensure superb legibility against the backdrop of a jet-black solid-silver dial.

Black dial features a pulsometer scale at its periphery. It is used for heart-rate measurements. This is done by stopping the time while counting 30 heartbeats. Then, on the pulsometer scale, the chronograph sweep-seconds hand provides a direct reading of the number of beats per minute.

Heart rates can be determined with the pulsimeter scale on the outer ring of the dial. It is graduated from 40 to 200 beats. When the time for 30 beats is measured, the peripheral scale indicates the heart rate per minute. The personality of this new member of the 1815 family, characterised by contrasts between light and dark, is underscored with a black alligator leather strap and a solid white-gold Lange prong buckle.

A sapphire-crystal caseback reveals the sublime architecture and lavish finissage of the chronograph movement. It provides an enlightening glimpse of the complex switching sequences.

In 1947, American pilot Milton Reynolds broke the record for an around-the-world flight in 78 hours and 55 minutes with a Multifort on his wrist. This model served as the inspiration for the Multifort Escape. Seventy years after this feat, this contemporary reinterpretation will be a fitting timepiece for anyone wanting to explore new horizons and surpass their limits. Mido’s largest three-hand model, the Multifort Escape features a robust 44 mm stainless steel case with an aged and sandblasted black PVD treatment, a finish which makes each model unique. Protected by a domed sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective treatment on both sides, the black dial is decorated with vertical Geneva stripes that create a subtle and entrancing play on shadow and light, and adorned with several orange touches, a nod to Mido’s identity and to the model of the 1940s. Touches of green Super-LumiNova® on the numerals and the hands give it a vintage look and ensure perfect legibility in any circumstances. These hands are directly inspired by the earlier model, as are the dial and the crown. A window at 6 o’clock indicates the day and date.

The Multifort Escape is fitted with a latest generation automatic movement, the Caliber 80, which gives it exceptional autonomy: up to 80 hours of power reserve. This finely decorated Elaboré-grade movement, with its oscillating weight decorated with Geneva stripes and the Mido logo, can be viewed through the transparent case back. Water-resistant up to a pressure of 10 bar (100 m / 330 ft), the Multifort Escape comes with a magnificent, natural-looking black strap made from genuine calfskin. It is decorated with ecru stitching and features a stainless steel pin buckle with an aged and sandblasted black PVD treatment, the ultimate vintage touches to this model.

Three other versions of the Multifort Escape are also available, including a special edition set to be released this autumn.

The latter – the flange – is activated and locked by one of the crowns, thus making it possible to determine the remaining bottom time.

Featuring a knurled bezel, the signature feature of the Toric family, the case of this timepiece was the first creation designed by Michel Parmigiani in 1996. This founding model is now bringing its elegant and classic aesthetics to the world of modern travel.

A WORLD FIRST INSPIRED BY A RESTORED PIECE

It was a restored piece that inspired Parmigiani Fleurier to add the GMT complication to its collection. Parmigiani Fleurier's restoration workshops had been entrusted with a pocket watch containing two movements inside one case, each responsible for its own time zone. This sparked a desire to create a timepiece that incorporated the same accuracy of display in the reduced space of a watch case too small to house two separate movements.

Michel Parmigiani found an elegant solution to this limitation by constructing a single calibre that controls two time zones, each accurate to the nearest minute. The Tonda Hémisphères released by Parmigiani Fleurier in 2010 was a world first. In 2017, the brand is extending this exceptional movement to the Toric collection, its founding model, to add a dimension of travel to its elegant and timeless aesthetics.

The Toric Hémisphères Rétrograde has two time zones, each accurate to the nearest minute. A module is indexed to the main movement in order to govern the second time zone. By pulling out the small crown at 2 o'clock, the module is disengaged from the movement, meaning that it can be adjusted independently of the second time zone, to the nearest minute.

When the crown is pressed back in, the movement and the module re-engage and the second time zone is re-indexed to the first so that they operate simultaneously with the desired interval. The main crown at 4 o'clock is used to wind the movement and set the time of the two paired time zones, such as the date.

Each of the time zones is associated with a window, which provides the day/night indication so that the time of day can be read in an instant for each time zone.

The calibre PF 317 also features an instant retrograde calendar, indicated by the third central hand. As it moves towards the last days of the month, the hand activates a spring which drives it back to number 1 with great force. This 240° movement is so fast that it cannot be seen with the naked eye.

This self-winding movement has a double series-mounted barrel for improved isochronism and rate regularity, with a power reserve of 50 hours.

UNDERSTATED YET CAPTIVATING AESTHETICS

The dial of the Toric Hémisphères Rétrograde is designed so that the most important functions stand out the most in a very specific hierarchy. Firstly, the hands of the main time zone, plated in 4N gold, are coated with Super-LumiNova® to make them luminous and more prominent.

Meanwhile, the hands of the second time zone are rhodium-plated to present a more discreet shade. Finally, the date indication stands out thanks to fine numerals that are large enough to ensure good legibility. They are indicated by a hand ending in a red crescent moon. The rest of the dial is understated, discreet and harmonious to avoid any distractions when reading these key temporal indications.
